Overview

CKR is a Designated Project under the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance (EIAO). We have optimised the design of CKR taking into account the results of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to enhance the environmental performance of the project. The EIA is completed. According to the result of the EIA, the construction and operation of CKR will comply with the requirements of the EIAO. The EIA report was approved by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) on 11 July 2013. An Environmental Permit was issued by the EPD on 9 August 2013.

The major part of CKR is formed by tunnel. This will help reduce the number of vehicles on the roads in central Kowloon as well as shortening the journey time. Air pollution and noise nuisance caused by vehicles can also be reduced which will ultimately improve the living quality of residents in central Kowloon.

It is estimated that the project can help reduce annual emission of some 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent to that absorbed by 860,000 new trees per year (covering an area of over 160 numbers of Kowloon Park), 18 tonnes of nitrogen oxides and 2 tonnes of respirable suspended particulates after the commissioning of the CKR.
